چکیده

Sexual size dimorphism is widespread among animals; males are larger than females in most birds and mammals whereas the opposite is true among invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles (Andersson 1994, Fairbairn 1997). These taxonomic differences have influenced the terminology and prevailing hypotheses for dimorphism. Although sexual size dimorphism is often described as “normal-” or “reversed-” by ornithologists, a broader taxonomic perspective indicates that “male-biased” and “female-biased” dimorphism are more appropriate terms. Size dimorphism is often attributed to a selective pressure on one sex: sexual selection on males among male-biased species versus a fecundity-advantage of large female size in What is the relative importance of sexual selection and ecological processes in the evolution of sexual size dimorphism in monogamous shorebirds?

Mating systems, sperm competition, and the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds.

Comparative analyses suggest that a variety of factors influence the evolution of sexual dimorphism in birds. We analyzed the relative importance of social mating system and sperm competition to sexual differences in plumage and body size (mass and tail and wing length) of more than 1,000 species of birds from throughout the world. In these analyses we controlled for phylogeny and a variety of ...

Study of Sexual Dimorphism in Second-to-fourth Digit Length Ratio (2D: 4D) in the Green-Bellied Lizard (Darevskia cholorogaster) from Iran

Sexual dimorphism in digit ration is related to genetic differences between species in response to prenatal exposure to hormones. In this study, the development of tetrapod digits, preliminary the ratio between the length of digit II and IV (2D: 4D) was investigated in 34 samples of Darevskia cholorogaster in the North of Iran. The results showed no significant differences between sexes in any ...

Sexual dimorphism of Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859) in Gamasiab River, Kermanshah province

Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859 is considered as one of the non-native and invasive species in the inland waters of Iran. This species occurs in most inland basins and aquatic bodies of Iran and has even been found in brackish waters. Extensive adaptations of this species to its different habitats caused numerous changes in its biological characteristics and morphological traits. The present st...

Reduced Skull Sexual Dimorphism in a Local Sheep Breed

This study estimated the magnitude of sexual dimorphism in a relict sheep from Catalunya (NE Spain), called Fardasca, using geometric morphometric techniques. For these analyses, a total of 18 skull specimens (2 adult males and 16 females) were studied. Our results suggest that the breed is not cranially dimorphic, so sex determination using landmarks described here as criteria is likely to yiel...

Sexual selection on skeletal shape in Carnivora.

Lifetime reproductive success of males is often dependent upon the ability to physically compete for mates. However, species variation in social structure leads to differences in the relative importance of intraspecific aggression. Here, we present a large comparative dataset on sexual dimorphism in skeletal shape in Carnivora to test the hypotheses that carnivorans exhibit sexual dimorphism in...
